The vocabulary that runs through every math class

These sixteen words are not tied to one unit or one grade. They are the terms that show up whether the topic is arithmetic, geometry or statistics, the working language a student needs before any specific math lesson can make sense. Finding them in the grid is a warm-up. Knowing what each one names is the actual skill.

What the words mean

Numbers and how they are classified

An integer is a whole number, positive, negative or zero, with no fraction attached. A prime number has exactly two factors, itself and one, while a composite number has more than two. Not every number fits neatly into a fraction at all: a look at irrational numbers explains why a value like pi never resolves into a clean ratio, and examples of real numbers shows how integers, fractions and irrational numbers all sit inside one larger family. Beyond that family, complex numbers extend the number line in a direction ordinary arithmetic never needs.

Operations and the words that describe them

These four operation-names get used constantly in word problems, and mixing up “product” and “sum” is one of the most common reasons a correctly calculated answer ends up solving the wrong problem.

Measurement and units

A formula is a fixed rule connecting quantities, usually written with letters standing in for numbers, such as the one relating a circle’s radius to its area. Measurement only means something when it is attached to a consistent unit, which is why scientists worldwide default to the same short list of SI units rather than each using their own scale, and a broader look at units of measurement shows how far this idea reaches, from length and mass to time and temperature.

Data, chance and comparison

An average, more precisely called a mean, adds up a set of values and divides by how many there are. Probability measures how likely an event is, on a scale from zero, impossible, to one, certain. A ratio compares two quantities directly, such as 3 to 1, while a percent expresses a ratio out of a hundred. Testing whether a pattern in data is real or just noise is its own branch of the subject, and a look at examples of statistical tests shows the tools researchers actually use to decide. Shape, pattern and structure

An angle measures the space between two lines that meet at a point, usually in degrees. Symmetry describes a shape that looks the same after being flipped or rotated.
