The people who built the things this list names

Every word in this grid is either an inventor or an invention, and most of the puzzle is easier to solve once you know which one goes with which. Some of these inventions replaced each other outright. Others are still running quiet competitions against alternatives that never quite won.

What the words mean

Edison, Tesla and the war over electricity

Thomas Edison built a workable incandescent light bulb and backed direct current, or DC, as the standard for delivering electricity. Nikola Tesla developed alternating current, or AC, and worked with George Westinghouse to prove it could travel much farther with far less power lost along the way. The two systems fought for dominance in what history remembers as the “War of the Currents,” and a look at the differences between alternating current and direct current explains why AC won the fight to power entire cities while DC survives today in batteries and electronics. Tesla’s other major contribution, the practical electric motor, is still explained the same way in examples of electric motors.

Gutenberg and the spread of written knowledge

Johannes Gutenberg’s printing press, developed in the 15th century, used movable metal type to print pages far faster than any scribe could copy them by hand, and it is routinely ranked among the top scientific discoveries of the 15th century. Before the press, a single book could take a scribe months to copy; after it, hundreds of identical copies could be produced in the time it once took to finish one page.

Jenner and the invention of vaccination

Edward Jenner discovered that exposure to cowpox, a mild disease, could protect a person from smallpox, one of the deadliest diseases in history, and his 1796 experiment is generally credited as the origin of vaccination. Babbage, Lovelace and the machine that could compute

Charles Babbage designed the first mechanical general-purpose computer, though it was never fully built in his lifetime. Ada Lovelace, working from his designs, wrote what is considered the first computer program, an algorithm intended to run on a machine that did not yet exist. Their work sits at the root of everything covered under examples of programming languages and the step-by-step logical procedures known today as sorting algorithms, one of the first problems computer science formally learned to solve.

Simple machines behind complicated ones

Long before electricity, a small set of basic mechanical inventions did most of the world’s heavy lifting. Inventions that took more than one person

Very few inventions on this list came from a single mind working alone. Tesla needed Westinghouse’s money and manufacturing to get alternating current built at scale. Lovelace needed Babbage’s machine design before she had anything to write a program for. Even Edison ran a research lab with dozens of employees rather than working solo in a garage, a model closer to today’s chemical engineers and industrial teams than to the lone-genius story usually told about him.
