Sixteen words, one working body
The words hidden in this grid come from anatomy and physiology, the two subjects that describe what the body is made of and how it keeps running. Some name whole organs, others name tissues you only see under a microscope. Knowing what each term means turns the puzzle into a quick anatomy review.
What the words mean
Organs and organ systems
An organ is a structure built from more than one tissue type, working together on a specific job. The heart pumps blood through roughly 60,000 miles of vessels; you can check these facts about the heart for the numbers behind that. The skeleton
Bone is a living tissue, not the dead scaffolding it looks like. The adult skeleton sorts its 206 bones into shapes by function. Flat bones, like the ones in the skull and shoulder blades, protect organs and give muscles a broad surface to attach to. Short bones, roughly as wide as they are long, sit in the wrists and ankles where small, stable movements matter more than strength. Sesamoid bones are the odd ones out: small bones embedded inside a tendon rather than joined to other bones directly, and the kneecap is the biggest example of one.
Muscles

Blood, nerves and defense
Blood vessels carry blood to and from every organ, and they come in three types: arteries carrying blood away from the heart, veins carrying it back, and capillaries where the actual exchange with tissue happens. Using this in a classroom

Where anatomy vocabulary gets confusing
A few of these terms get mixed up constantly, and it is worth naming the mix-ups directly. Students often use “organ” and “tissue” interchangeably, but a tissue is a group of similar cells, while an organ is built from several tissue types working together, so the heart is an organ made partly of muscle tissue and partly of nervous tissue. “Skeletal muscle” and “muscle” also get flattened into one idea, when in fact only skeletal muscle is voluntary; the heart itself is built from cardiac muscle, which never gets tired the way an arm does. The word “bone” suggests something rigid and dead, but bone tissue contains living cells that constantly break down and rebuild the skeleton over a person’s lifetime, which is also why bones heal after a fracture instead of just staying cracked. Getting these distinctions straight is most of what an anatomy unit is actually testing, more than memorizing where each organ sits.
