Sixteen words about shape, space and measurement
Geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with shape, size and position, everything from a single angle to a solid you can hold. The words in this grid cover the basic building blocks: the lines and angles that make up a shape, the measurements used to describe it, and the language for moving from flat figures to three-dimensional solids.
What the words mean
Points, lines and angles
A point marks a single location with no size of its own; a line extends in both directions without end; a line segment is the finite piece between two points. An angle is formed where two lines or segments meet at a point called a vertex, and it is measured in degrees. A right angle measures exactly 90 degrees, an acute angle is smaller than that, and an obtuse angle is larger than 90 but smaller than 180. Two lines that never meet, no matter how far extended, are parallel; two that cross at a right angle are perpendicular.
Polygons
A polygon is any closed, flat shape made entirely of straight sides. The name changes with the number of sides: three makes a triangle, four a quadrilateral, five a pentagon, six a hexagon. A polygon is regular when all its sides and angles are equal, like a square, and irregular otherwise. Triangles get their own set of names based on their angles and sides: an equilateral triangle has three equal sides, an isosceles triangle has exactly two, and a right triangle contains one 90-degree angle, the type behind the Pythagorean theorem.
Circles
A circle is the set of all points at an equal distance from a single center point. That distance is the radius; twice the radius, straight across the circle through the center, is the diameter. The distance around the outside of a circle is called its circumference rather than its perimeter, a naming distinction that trips students up regularly. Circumference divided by diameter always gives the same number for every circle, no matter its size, and that constant is pi.
Measurement
Perimeter is the total distance around any flat shape, found by adding up the length of every side. Area is the amount of flat space a shape covers, measured in square units rather than plain length units, which is why an area figure is always written with a squared unit like square inches or square meters. Volume extends the same idea into three dimensions, measuring how much space a solid takes up, and it is measured in cubic units for the same reason area uses square ones.
Solids
Once a flat shape gains a third dimension it becomes a solid. A cube has six identical square faces; a rectangular prism has six faces that are rectangles rather than squares; a sphere is the three-dimensional version of a circle, every point on its surface an equal distance from the center; a cone narrows from a circular base to a single point; a cylinder has two parallel circular bases connected by a curved side. Each of these has its own formula for volume, and confusing which formula belongs to which solid is one of the most common errors on a geometry test.
Using this in a classroom
The three sheets carry the same sixteen words in different grids, which works for a first attempt in class and a retest or homework version afterward. Where geometry shows up outside the classroom
Geometry coverage on this site is thinner than the astronomy or biology sections, so this list stays short rather than padded. Two real connections are worth making, though. Fractals are shapes that repeat the same pattern at every scale, a coastline looking similarly jagged whether viewed from a map or from the ground, and they extend the polygon and solid vocabulary above into shapes that classical geometry was never built to describe. Crystal structures apply the same angle and symmetry vocabulary to chemistry: the atoms in a mineral like quartz or salt lock into a repeating geometric lattice, and the specific angles between its faces are what let a geologist identify a mineral just by its shape. A number worth mentioning alongside the circle definitions above: pi is irrational, meaning its decimal digits never terminate or repeat, and these irrational numbers explain why that property makes a circle’s circumference impossible to write as an exact fraction, no matter how precisely it is measured.
