Are There Volcanoes in Sierra Leone? Here’s the Real Answer

Why Sierra Leone Skipped the Volcanoes

Volcanoes need a reason to exist — a plate boundary, a rift pulling the crust apart, a hotspot burning through from below. Sierra Leone has none of those, and it hasn’t for a very long time.

Roughly three-quarters of the country sits on the Kenema-Man domain of the West African Craton, a slab of Archean crust that’s been sitting there, largely undisturbed, for over 2.5 billion years. According to the British Geological Survey’s mapping overview, the basement rock was built and reworked during two ancient mountain-building episodes: the Leonean, around 2,950 to 3,200 million years ago, and the Liberian, around 2,700 million years ago. Both happened deep in the Archean, long before anything resembling modern plate tectonics as we usually picture it.

The most recent geological event of note is the Pan-African orogeny, about 550 million years ago, known locally as the Rokelide Orogen. It folded and deformed the craton’s western edge but didn’t punch any new holes for magma to rise through. No rift opened underneath the country. No subduction zone dove beneath it. No hotspot parked itself under West Africa’s interior. Without one of those triggers, there’s simply no mechanism to build a volcano — which is why Sierra Leone’s terrain is old, weathered, and geologically quiet, even as earthquakes occasionally rattle it and volcanoes erupt on other continents entirely.

The Sierra Leone Rise: Where the Lava Actually Went

Here’s where the academic papers that dominate the search results actually make sense — they’re just answering a different question than “does Sierra Leone have volcanoes.”

Offshore, southwest of the coast, sits the Sierra Leone Rise: a chain of submerged seamounts running northeast to southwest out toward the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, some cresting as shallow as 2 kilometers below the surface. It formed during the breakup of Gondwana, when the equatorial Atlantic was tearing open. Research published in Nature dated the volcanic rock recovered from the Rise to the Late Cretaceous, with the most intense eruptive activity concentrated between roughly 90 and 68 million years ago — the same violent stretch of seafloor spreading that pried Africa and South America apart.

A 2020 study in Scientific Reports links the Rise to a single mantle hotspot, one that may have also produced the Ceará Rise on the Brazilian side of the Atlantic and left magmatic traces as far away as the Demerara Plateau off French Guiana. It’s a genuinely interesting piece of plate-tectonic history — it just happened underwater, tens of millions of years ago, and nowhere near the country that shares its name.

Earthquakes Aren’t Volcanoes: What Actually Shakes Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone does get earthquakes — just not the kind tied to magma. Intraplate earthquakes happen even in the middle of ancient, “stable” crust, usually along old fault lines left over from those Archean and Pan-African deformation events, as the rock slowly releases stress it’s been carrying for billions of years.

The strongest one on record hit in February 2021: a magnitude 5.0 quake centered about 216 kilometers north of Freetown, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. It’s the kind of event that gets felt, makes headlines locally, and then fades — Sierra Leone has logged only a handful of magnitude 4.0-plus quakes since 1970, and none in the last decade approached that 2021 event. That’s a fundamentally different animal from volcanic seismicity, where swarms of small quakes usually signal magma forcing its way toward the surface. Here, there’s no magma to force anything anywhere. It’s just old rock settling old scores.

How Sierra Leone Stacks Up Against West Africa’s Real Volcanoes

West Africa isn’t uniformly volcano-free — it just concentrates its activity elsewhere. Mount Cameroon, roughly 2,500 kilometers east along the coast, is one of the continent’s most consistently active volcanoes, part of the Cameroon Line chain that stretches from offshore islands into the Nigerian and Cameroonian interior. It has erupted multiple times in the past century.

Closer, but still nearly 1,400 kilometers northwest across open ocean, sits Fogo in Cape Verde — the only currently active volcano in that archipelago, built by hotspot magmatism rather than a plate boundary. Both of those volcanoes exist because something disturbs the crust beneath them: a mantle plume, a zone of crustal weakness, a line of magmatic activity with an actual engine behind it.

Sierra Leone has the engine parts — old crust, old faults — but never got the hotspot or the rift that would have put them to use. That’s not a gap in the geological record. It’s just how a 2.5-billion-year-old craton happens to behave when nothing ever forces it to erupt.
