List of Endemic Species of Eswatini

featured_image

No strictly endemic species of Eswatini are currently recorded

Note that no animal or plant species are recognized as strictly endemic to Eswatini (that is, found only inside the country’s political borders) by major sources such as IUCN, GBIF, SANBI, or recent local surveys. Use a strict definition of “endemic” and you get an empty list for the country of Eswatini.

Understand why this happens. Eswatini is small and sits inside larger, shared ecoregions. Many plants and animals found in Eswatini also occur in adjacent parts of South Africa and Mozambique. Political borders do not match ecological boundaries, so true country-only endemics are rare unless a place has strong geographic isolation (islands, deep valleys, or very high mountains).

Consider close alternatives and useful directions. Look for near-endemics and regional endemics instead — for example, species restricted to the Lubombo Mountains, the Drakensberg escarpment, or the Maputaland–Pondoland–Albany biodiversity hotspot. Also check for endemic subspecies, locally rare plants and invertebrates, and species of conservation concern that have most of their range inside Eswatini. Explore SANBI, IUCN, GBIF, and local research for curated lists and range maps.

MD-PhD in Molecular Biology from UCSF, with clinical rotations in internal medicine and a research focus on immunology. Left the hospital because he realized the gap between a medical paper and a patient's understanding was the most important gap in science. Now writes about gene therapies, pandemic preparedness, and everything in between. Still reads The Lancet every Friday morning out of habit.
